Communications Minister says Ramses Telephone Exchange is not only telecom Egypt relies on

CAIRO – 9 July 2025: Egypt’s Minister of Communications, Amr Talaat, said on Wednesday that Ramses Telephone Exchange is not the only telecom Egypt relies on; otherwise, Egyptians would not have been able to access social media and share news about the fire.

He added in a press conference at the Cabinet headquarters that the fire spread from the seventh floor of the building through the pipes, which served as outlets for the fire, spreading throughout the entire building.

In the conference, Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly commented on the circulated rumors that the government burned down the Ramses Telephone Exchange because it wanted to sell it, saying: “No comment. There's no logic to that. It's easier for me to move the service to another location and sell the telecom building than to go and sign a service contract and burn down a place in order to sell it.”

Madbouly also denied rumors of his candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the Arab League, saying: “This is only Rumors, and not everything we hear should be believed.”
