Intense heat wave felt across Egypt - file
CAIRO - 12 August 2025: The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) revealed that the latest satellite images indicate an intense heat wave across most parts of the country, with extremely hot and humid weather prevailing across most parts, and Cairo recording highs of 40 degrees Celsius.
EMA also expected hot and humid on the northern coasts, and hot and humid at night and early morning.
Dr. Manar Ghanem, a member of the media center at the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, explained that the intense heat wave is the result of the country being affected by an extension of a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, known as a "heat dome." This system helps increase sunshine and raise temperatures by trapping hot air beneath the heat dome. Furthermore, there are desert air masses affecting some governorates.
She noted that temperatures are more than 5 degrees higher than normal rates, explaining that the peak of the wave will be from Monday until the end of the week. Furthermore, high humidity levels will increase the perceived temperature to exceed 42 degrees Celsius in Greater Cairo.
Dr. Mahmoud Shahin, Director General of Forecasting and Early Warning at the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, revealed that fog is expected Tuesday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 AM in areas from the north of the country to Greater Cairo. This fog may be dense at times on roads leading to and from the Bahari, the northern coasts, central Sinai, and the Canal cities.
Rising humidity levels are expected Tuesday, increasing the sensation of heat in the shade, with values ranging from 2:4 degrees. There is a slight chance of light rain and thunderstorms in Salloum and Marsa Matrouh. There is also a chance of light, moderate, and sometimes thunderstorms, which may lead to flash floods in areas of southern and central Sinai. Light rain and thunderstorms are also expected in areas of southern Upper Egypt.
Maritime navigation is also expected to be disrupted in the Gulf of Suez Tuesday, with wind speeds ranging from 40 to 60 km/h and waves ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 meters high.
