Egypt’s FM, South African counterpart discuss bilateral relations, regional and int’l developments

CAIRO – 13 August 2025: Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty stated that strong historical ties and ongoing coordination between Egypt and South Africa are boosting bilateral relations and fostering joint cooperation, which both countries value.

This came during a phone call on Wednesday between Abdelatty and his South African counterpart Ronald Lamola to discuss ways of strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries in various fields, as well as regional and international issues of common concern, particularly in light of South Africa’s presidency of the G20.

During the call, FM Abdelatty conveyed Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al Sisi greetings to his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, and emphasized Egypt's pride in its strong historical relations with South Africa.

Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s readiness to cooperate with South Africa in implementing development projects in various sectors, drawing on the extensive expertise of Egyptian companies.

On the issue of water security, Abdelatty stressed the need to adhere to the rules of international law regarding shared water resources, underlining the importance of cooperation to achieve mutual benefit based on international law and rejecting unilateral measures that violate international law in the Eastern Nile Basin.

The two ministers also reviewed major political and security developments at the regional and international levels, especially the situation in the Gaza Strip and efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and allow the entry of humanitarian aid.

They also discussed developments in Libya, Sudan, Somalia, and the Horn of Africa region.

The two ministers agreed to intensify efforts and joint work at both the bilateral and multilateral levels, particularly within the African Union and the G20, to enhance regional integration and achieve mutual interests.

For his part, the South African minister praised Egypt’s efforts to promote peace, security, and stability in the Middle East and across the African continent.
