Cairo court upholds 15-year-imprisonment sentence against truck driver over killing 19 young women

CAIRO – 15 November 2025:  A Cairo Court of Appeals in Wadi al-Natroun upheld a 15-year prison sentence against a truck driver involved in a tragic accident that killed 19 young women and one man, after a microbus carrying them collided with his truck on the Regional Ring Road on June 27, 2025. The owner of the truck owner was also sentenced to five years in prison.

According to the investigation, the driver has been charged with using the narcotic substances hashish and methamphetamine, as well as committing manslaughter and causing unintentional injury. The charges stem from driving a car against the flow of traffic on the aforementioned highway without holding a license that authorized him to operate it, and while under the influence of narcotics. He also faces charges of endangering the lives of others.

The charges also included causing damage to public road infrastructure and to a vehicle belonging to another party due to gross negligence.

The Public Prosecution additionally charged the truck owner with the misdemeanor of allowing the driver to operate the vehicle despite knowing that he did not possess the required license.
