During phone call with Turkish PM, Abdelatty reiterates Egypt’s complete rejection of any measures undermining unity of Palestinian territory

CAIRO – 4 January 2025: Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, and Mr. Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, held a telephone call as part of the ongoing communication and consultation between Cairo and Ankara on ways to advance bilateral relations and exchange views on regional issues of common interest.

The call addressed prospects for strengthening Egyptian-Turkish relations and building on the positive momentum witnessed recently. The two ministers reviewed the preparations underway for the second meeting of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, to be chaired by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the first quarter of 2026. 

Minister Abdelatty emphasized the importance of the meeting in supporting the bilateral partnership, particularly in the economic, trade, and investment sectors, which will contribute to maximizing the shared interests of the two friendly nations.

The two ministers also exchanged views on a number of regional issues, especially the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. Minister Abdelatty stressed the necessity of consolidating the ceasefire and moving forward with the requirements of the second phase of the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Agreement. In this context, he emphasized the importance of initiating transitional arrangements, ensuring the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and commencing early recovery and reconstruction efforts. He also reiterated the complete rejection of any measures or practices that would undermine the unity of Palestinian territory, including the ongoing Israeli violations in the West Bank.

The two ministers also discussed developments in Yemen, emphasizing the importance of de-escalation, reducing tensions, and prioritizing dialogue and consensus, while rejecting any unilateral actions, in order to contribute to achieving security and stability for the brotherly Yemeni people.

In connection with the latest developments in the Horn of Africa, the two ministers affirmed their complete rejection of Israel's recognition of the so-called "Somaliland," considering it a flagrant violation of the principles of international law and the UN Charter. They emphasized that this recognition undermines the foundations of regional and international peace and security, particularly in the Horn of Africa, a position also rejected by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and all countries in the region. They stressed their support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia, in accordance with the principles of international law and the UN Charter, and their opposition to any unilateral actions that could infringe upon Somali sovereignty or undermine stability in the country.

At the conclusion of the call, the two ministers agreed to continue consultations and coordination in the coming period, with the aim of supporting regional stability and strengthening bilateral relations between their countries.
