FM discusses regional developments with British National Security Advisor

CAIRO - 4 February 2026: Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Egyptian Expatriate Affairs, discussed regional developments in a Wednesday telephone call with Jonathan Powell, British National Security Advisor.

 

Developments in Iran

 

Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the call addressed developments in Iran.

 

Minister Abdelatty stressed the need to continue efforts to contain tensions and work towards de-escalation, in order to prevent the region from sliding into new waves of instability. He pointed to Egypt's intensive diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting political and diplomatic solutions.

 

He also emphasized the necessity of working to create a conducive environment for resuming dialogue between the United States and Iran regarding the Iranian nuclear issue, leading to a comprehensive settlement that takes into account the interests of all parties and supports security and stability at both the regional and international levels.

 

Developments in the Palestinian Issue

 

The call addressed developments in the Palestinian issue, with the Foreign Minister stressing the need for the international community to fulfill its responsibilities to ensure the implementation of the second phase of President Trump's plan, support the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, and expedite the deployment of the international stabilization force to monitor the ceasefire.

 

This would pave the way for early recovery and reconstruction based on a comprehensive approach that addresses the needs of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and guarantees the continued flow of humanitarian aid without hindrance.

 

The official spokesperson added that the call also discussed developments in Sudan, with the Foreign Minister emphasizing the importance of reaching a humanitarian truce as a prelude to a comprehensive ceasefire. He stressed the need for concerted regional and international efforts to launch a comprehensive, Sudanese-owned political process.

 

He noted the necessity of establishing safe humanitarian corridors to ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to the Sudanese people.

 

He reiterated Egypt's firm position in support of respecting Sudan's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and preserving its national institutions, outlining the efforts Egypt is undertaking within the framework of the Quartet mechanism.
