Egypt’s Public Prosecution releases 28 pretrial defendants

CAIRO – 23 February 2026: Egypt’s Public Prosecution released 28 defendants, who are being held in pretrial detention, on Monday to support the rehabilitation and reintegration of those released into society.

As per a statement from the prosecution and directives from Attorney General Mohamed Shawky for all public prosecution offices, the Attorney-General asked to regularly review the legal status of defendants held in pretrial detention. So, Chief Prosecutor of the Supreme State Security Prosecution ordered the release of 28 defendants on February 22, 2026, in cases under investigation by the office.

The decision underscored the Public Prosecution’s commitment to justice, which encompasses not only holding offenders accountable but also supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of those released into society, in line with the principles of rights and freedoms, the statement said.
