U.S. President suspends bombing of Iran for two weeks; receives 10-point proposal

CAIRO –7 April 2026: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the suspension of bombing and attacks against Iran for a period of two weeks. He explained that he received a 10-point proposal from Tehran, which he believes serves as a "workable basis on which to negotiate."

"Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, and their request that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran—and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz—I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The President described this suspension as a "double-sided CEASEFIRE," adding that the U.S. has already "met and exceeded all military objectives" and is making significant progress toward a definitive agreement for long-term peace in the Middle East.

He noted that while most points of past contention have been resolved, a two-week window is necessary to finalize and consummate the agreement.

Earlier on Tuesday, Pakistan requested that President Trump extend his previous deadline by two weeks, asserting that diplomatic efforts were progressing steadily.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also called on Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as a "goodwill gesture." In response, the White House confirmed the President was engaged in "intense negotiations" and would formally respond soon, while a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran is positively considering the ceasefire request.

Diplomatic activity surged on Tuesday night prior the announcement. Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, held phone talks with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister, Muhammad Ishaq Dar, to coordinate de-escalation efforts.

Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry, stated the call addressed joint efforts to reach understandings that would lead to a permanent ceasefire. Similar high-level diplomatic coordination was reported between the foreign ministries of Turkey and Saudi Arabia with their Pakistani counterparts.
