Egypt condemns attacks on Saudi oil facilities, Jordan, backs their security measures

CAIRO – 29 July 2026: Egypt on Wednesday strongly condemned the targeting of oil facilities in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province and attacks on Jordan, describing them as grave escalation that threatens regional stability and global energy security.

In a statement, the foreign ministry said the attacks constitute unacceptable assaults on the sovereignty of states and civilian and vital facilities, a flagrant violation of international law.

Egypt reaffirmed its full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and Jordan, voicing support for all measures taken by the two countries to safeguard their security, stability, sovereignty, and vital facilities.

The statement also reiterated Cairo's categorical rejection of attacks targeting civilian installations, critical infrastructure, or the sovereignty and security of Arab states.

Early on Wednesday, Jordan's armed forces said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed five missiles launched from Iran.

The military's announcement came after the US military said it had thwarted an Iranian ballistic missile barrage targeting American forces in the Middle East.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said they launched ballistic missiles at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base and the headquarters of the U.S. Central Command in Jordan, according to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency.

US-Saudi Strikes

Meanwhile, US and Saudi forces carried out coordinated strikes against Iran-backed militia targets in Iraq after a series of drone attacks that attempted to target Saudi oil facilities and US forces in the region.

Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), an umbrella group of Iran-aligned militias in Iraq, said at least 20 of its fighters were killed and 32 others wounded in US-Saudi strikes.

The PMF said the attacks targeted several of its headquarters across Iraq, including in the capital, Baghdad, causing "varying degrees of damage" to several headquarters, military vehicles, and equipment.

The group added that the casualty figures are preliminary, stating that the death toll and number of injured could rise as search operations and damage assessments continue.

Separately, Saudi Arabia confirmed its participation in the operation, saying the strikes came in response to drone attacks launched by Iraqi militants that attempted to target oil facilities in Eastern Province and Riyadh.

In a statement posted on X, the Saudi Ministry of Defense reaffirmed the Kingdom’s right to self-defense, saying it does not seek escalation but will respond to any aggression against it.
