President El-Sisi: Authorities launch investigations into Damietta incident

CAIRO – 30 July 2026: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a telephone call on Thursday with Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain.

Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy, official spokesperson for the Presidency, stated that Prime Minister Sánchez began the call by expressing Spain's condemnation of the July 29 drone attack on two ships at Damietta Port. He affirmed the solidarity of the Spanish government and people with Egypt during this difficult time.

President El-Sisi explained that relevant authorities are conducting investigations to determine the full circumstances of the incident. He highlighted the dangerous escalation in the region, stressing the need for Egypt, Spain, Europe, and the broader international community to work together to halt further tension.

The spokesperson added that the call also addressed the latest regional developments, with President El-Sisi outlining Egypt's ongoing stabilization efforts. Prime Minister Sánchez expressed deep appreciation for these endeavors, with both leaders emphasizing peaceful conflict resolution to maintain peace and security in the Middle East.

In this context, the Spanish Prime Minister stressed the need for the United Nations to fulfill its role in ending the ongoing war, emphasizing the importance of reaching a just resolution to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution.

During the call, President El-Sisi also expressed Egypt's full solidarity with Spain regarding recent wildfires in several Spanish regions, offering sincere condolences to the victims' families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. The President affirmed Egypt's readiness to provide all necessary support to assist Spain, expressing full confidence in Spain's ability to overcome the crisis.

Additionally, President El-Sisi congratulated Prime Minister Sánchez on the Spanish national team's victory in the FIFA World Cup.

The official spokesperson noted that Prime Minister Sánchez expressed deep appreciation for President El-Sisi's message of support during a critical time for his country.
