Egypt renews invitation to Ugandan president to attend African Union Coordination Summit

CAIRO – 1 August 2026: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad Badr Abdelatty met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Friday on the sidelines of the Second Extraordinary Summit of Troop-Contributing Countries to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), held in Kampala.

During the meeting, Abdelatty renewed Egypt's invitation to President Museveni to attend the African Union Coordination Summit, which Egypt will host on Oct. 4, 2026, as well as the African Business Forum, which will be held on the sidelines of the summit.

The talks focused on ways to strengthen bilateral relations and coordinate positions on issues of mutual interest.

Abdelatty conveyed the greetings of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to President Museveni, stressing Egypt's pride in the longstanding historical ties between the two countries. He praised the growing momentum in bilateral relations and the exchange of high-level visits, most recently President El-Sisi's visit to Kampala in May.

President Museveni, in turn, asked Abdelatty to convey his greetings and appreciation to President El-Sisi, praising his constructive role in promoting security and stability in Africa and the Middle East. He also reaffirmed Uganda's commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Egypt in light of the deep historical ties between the two nations.

On bilateral cooperation, Abdelatty underscored the importance of expanding trade, economic, and investment ties in a range of sectors, particularly infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture, water resource management, and pharmaceuticals. He also reiterated the importance of continuing efforts to expand the Egyptian Medical Center in Jinja town in southern Uganda.

On water security, Abdelatty stressed the importance of cooperation and integration among Nile Basin countries to achieve shared benefits and mutual interests. He highlighted the need to uphold the spirit of consensus and solidarity among the Southern Nile Basin countries to restore inclusivity to the Nile Basin Initiative and reject unilateral measures in the Eastern Nile Basin.

The foreign minister also commended Uganda's efforts during its chairmanship of the Nile Basin Initiative's consultative process, as well as the decisions adopted by the Initiative's Ministerial Council to restore consensus and inclusivity and advance development projects that serve the common interests of all member states in accordance with international law.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional developments and ways to promote peace, security, and development across Africa, with particular focus on Sudan, Somalia, and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. They agreed to strengthen coordination through bilateral and multilateral frameworks to advance shared interests and support stability and sustainable development across the continent.
