Egypt endures scorching heat wave

CAIRO – 2 August 2026: Egypt is experiencing the peak of an exceptional heat wave today, with temperatures reaching a record 46°C in Upper Egypt and ranging between 40°C and 43°C across Greater Cairo and the Nile Delta. The intense heat is being compounded by a sharp rise in humidity, making temperatures feel even higher.

Dr. Mohamed Ali Fahim, Head of the Climate Change Information Center at the Agricultural Research Center, explained that the extreme weather is being driven by a "heat dome" that traps hot air near the Earth's surface. The phenomenon has coincided with the extension of the Indian monsoon low-pressure system and the influx of extremely hot air masses from the Libyan Desert.

Health and metrological experts have urged citizens to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, from midday through the late afternoon. They also stressed the importance of staying hydrated, wearing loose-fitting cotton clothing, postponing unnecessary physical activity, and taking extra precautions to protect children, older adults, and outdoor workers. Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion is advised to seek immediate medical attention.

On the agricultural front, Fahim emphasized the importance of adopting "smart" irrigation and fertilization practices to protect crops. He recommended increasing irrigation frequency, preferably during the early morning or evening hours, while avoiding excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers.

He also called for protecting heat-sensitive crops, such as tomatoes and cucumbers, by applying potassium silicate and adjusting agricultural work schedules to the cooler hours of the day to reduce health risks for farm workers.
