Veterinary Services Begins Microchipping Horses at the Pyramids

CAIRO - 4 August 2026: The General Authority for Veterinary Services announced the commencement of a project to microchip and register horses in the Giza Pyramids area.

 

This developmental and modern step reflects the Egyptian state's efforts to improve veterinary services and support the tourism sector.

 

The project comes within the framework of the Egyptian state's directives to develop the Giza Pyramids area and is being implemented under the instructions of Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, to expedite preparations for hosting the Longines Global Champions Tour, organized by the Egyptian Equestrian Federation in October 2026.

 

 

Highest Biosecurity Standards 

 

Dr. Hamed Al-Aqnas, Head of the General Authority for Veterinary Services, emphasized that the project represents the cornerstone for establishing a unified health database and record for each horse.

 

This will enhance the epidemiological tracking system and ensure the application of the highest biosecurity standards approved by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). He noted that the new preventative system includes several key components.

 

He pointed out that these aspects include: epidemiological surveillance and tracking, facilitating periodic laboratory testing and regular sample collection to verify the area's disease-free status; implementing biosecurity measures by regulating and prohibiting the movement of unregistered horses within and outside the tourist area to provide a safe and healthy environment for both horses and visitors; and establishing an electronic medical record system, creating a comprehensive health file for each horse that includes vaccinations, examinations, and treatment history.

 

Al-Aqnas added that the project is being implemented by specialized veterinary teams from the Central Administration for Preventive Medicine at the Authority, in cooperation with the Giza Veterinary Directorate, the Purebred Horse Cooperative Society, and Brooke Hospital, to ensure the highest levels of quality and readiness to host international sporting events.
