CAIRO – 5 August 2026: The Palestinian Authority said the agreement to implement the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire remains "only on paper" as Israel continues military operations against Palestinians despite the announced deal.
In a statement, presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh said Israeli authorities are continuing its comprehensive war against the Palestinian people, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.
He cited the deaths of 18 people in the Gaza Strip the previous day despite the announcement of an agreement to move forward with the ceasefire's second phase.
Abu Rudeineh said the agreement has failed to bring about a comprehensive end to the fighting or provide protection for Palestinians, describing it as "an agreement on paper and death on the ground."
He also accused Tel Aviv of disregarding international efforts aimed at halting Israeli crimes of genocide against the Palestinian people.
Abu Rudeineh further warned against what he described as the continued targeting and destruction of Palestinian refugee camps and villages, saying such actions formed part of broader plans aimed at undermining the Palestinian presence and eliminating the refugee issue.
The spokesperson renewed the Palestinian leadership's call on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to compel Israel to immediately implement the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.
He called for an end to military operations in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and for providing international protection for Palestinians.
Continued impunity encouraged further violations of international law and international humanitarian law, Abu Rudeineh stressed.
He said lasting security and stability in the region would only be achieved by ending the occupation, halting the fighting, and advancing a just and lasting peace.
This peace, the spokesman said, must be based on international legitimacy, the Arab Peace Initiative, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Since Gaza ceasefire took effect on October 11, Israel has killed 1,254 Palestinian people and injured 4,121 more, according to Gaza health authorities. The cumulative toll since the start of the war on October 7, 2023 has risen to 73,381 people killed and 174,231 injured.
