US seeks to announce Iran deal to reopen Strait of Hormuz this week: Axios

CAIRO – 5 August 2026: The United States, Iran and Oman are nearing an interim agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with Washington aiming to announce the deal on Wednesday, Axios reported, citing two regional sources and a US official.

The report said the agreement, under negotiation for several weeks, is intended to restore the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and revive talks on a nuclear deal.

Under the proposed 60-day arrangement, inbound shipping would pass through Iranian waters, while outbound traffic would transit Omani waters in coordination with Iran, according to the report.

The plan would suspend transit fees during the interim period and calls for clearing naval mines from the strait's median lane within 30 days, paving the way for a permanent navigation framework to be negotiated by Oman and Iran.
