President El-Sisi offers Egypt’s support to help Greece battle wildfires

CAIRO – 5 August 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has expressed Egypt’s solidarity with Greece amid wildfires, affirming Egypt’s readiness to provide all possible assistance to help contain the fires and limit their spread.

During a phone call on Wednesday with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, El-Sisi extended his condolences over the victims of the wildfires, particularly the pilots and firefighters who lost their lives while carrying out their heroic duty.

The president emphasized Egypt's support for Greece during this difficult time.

Mitsotakis thanked El-Sisi for the gesture, saying it reflected the historic and fraternal ties between the Egyptian and Greek peoples.

The Greek prime minister also underscored the two countries' strategic partnership.

Weeks of hot, dry weather have created ideal conditions for wildfires across Europe, with Greece among the hardest-hit countries.

More than 100 homes were destroyed in fires near the coastal village of Porto Germeno, west of Athens, prompting the deployment of more than 500 firefighters and forest commandos.

The crisis has claimed the lives of five Greek firefighters in recent days, including two who died in a helicopter collision west of Athens and three who succumbed to injuries sustained while battling wildfires in Crete and the Peloponnese.
