El-Sisi hails progress on Egypt-Greece power link project in talks with Mitsotakis

CAIRO – 5 August 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed progress on the Egypt-Greece electricity interconnection project during a phone call with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday.

El-Sisi described the project as a strategic EU-backed initiative that will strengthen energy security and promote economic integration across the Mediterranean, the Presidency said in a statement.

The two leaders reaffirmed the strategic nature of relations between Egypt and Greece and their commitment to building on the momentum achieved in bilateral ties over the past years.

They also discussed ways to expand cooperation in energy, electrical interconnection, investment, and trade.

El-Sisi commended the existing fruitful cooperation between the two countries in the fields of labor and migration.

Egypt and Greece elevated their ties to a strategic partnership in May 2025 amid growing cooperation in various fields, including energy, trade and migration.

A cornerstone of the partnership is the €3.569 billion GREGY interconnector, an EU-backed initiative that will transmit renewable electricity from Egypt to Greece and onward to Europe through a submarine cable.

The project is set to strengthen energy security and economic integration while enabling two-way power flows between the two countries.
