CAIRO – 7 August 2026: Ambassador Mohamed Abu Bakr, Deputy Foreign Minister, received his Japanese counterpart, Onishi Yohei, for talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations and exchanging views on pressing regional and international issues.
Ambassador Abu Bakr praised the steady growth of Egyptian-Japanese relations across various sectors and highlighted the strategic partnership between the two nations, which is built on mutual respect and shared perspectives on key global matters.
He emphasized Cairo's commitment to advancing joint initiatives, with discussions covering expanded cooperation in politics, trade, investment, education, technology transfer, digital transformation, and infrastructure.
The two officials reviewed regional developments, particularly in the Middle East. Ambassador Abu Bakr stressed the urgent need to intensify international efforts to de-escalate tensions, restore stability, and pursue diplomatic solutions in compliance with international law.
For his part, Onishi affirmed Japan's appreciation for Egypt's pivotal role in supporting regional security and mediating conflicts. He reiterated Tokyo's keenness to deepen the bilateral partnership to serve both nations' interests.
The meeting concluded with discussions on preparations for the upcoming Business Summit in El Alamein, held alongside the African Union's Mid-Year Coordination Summit. Ambassador Abu Bakr invited Japanese companies operating in Egypt and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to participate—an invitation the Japanese delegation welcomed as a strong opportunity to boost economic ties.
