CAIRO – 7 August 2026: Gohar Nabil, Minister of Youth and Sports, and Dr. Ibrahim Saber Khalil, Governor of Cairo, attended the "Cairo: Cradle of Civilization" running marathon. Organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports under the slogan "Egyptians' Fitness" as part of the National Physical Fitness Initiative, the event drew 7,000 participants of various age groups.
The marathon kicked off near the Al-Asher Bridge ramp, passing through the Fustat Pottery Village (Al-Fawakhyr) and Fustat Hills, before concluding at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC). The route was specifically designed to combine athletic engagement with highlighting the capital's historic and cultural landmarks.
The event concluded with an award ceremony for the top finishers amid broad community participation and outstanding organization, highlighting the Ministry of Youth and Sports' successful efforts to promote a culture of athletics and establish sports as a lifestyle.
Mr. Gohar Nabil, Minister of Youth and Sports, affirmed that the "Cairo: Cradle of Civilization" marathon aligns with the ministry’s vision to cultivate athletic habits across all social segments and build a healthier, more active society. He noted that the "Egyptians' Fitness" national initiative continues to expand across governorates to boost community participation.
The minister added that routing the marathon through Fustat to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization reflects the ministry's commitment to pairing sports with the promotion of Egypt's cultural and tourist destinations. He emphasized that such events highlight the state’s heritage identity and foster positive competition. He also praised the fruitful cooperation with the Governorate of Cairo and organizing partners, confirming that the ministry will continue launching sports initiatives in line with Egypt Vision 2030.
For his part, Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo, emphasized that the marathon underscores the state's commitment to expanding athletic participation while leveraging sports events to promote Cairo's historical landmarks, reinforcing its standing as a city that blends heritage with modern development.
The governor noted that the participation of over 7,000 runners reflects growing public awareness regarding the health benefits of sports. He added that the governorate, in coordination with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, provided all necessary logistical, traffic, and medical arrangements to ensure a safe and seamless event.
