Gas leak, partial explosion on gas pipeline beneath Ismailia Canal brought under control

CAIRO – 8 August 2026: The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation said a gas leak and partial explosion involving a natural gas pipeline running beneath the Ismailia Canal in northern Egypt’s Ismailia Governorate has been brought under immediate control.

In a statement, the ministry said intensive monitoring of the situation remains ongoing until all effects of the incident have been addressed and the safety of the water system and quality of water in the canal are fully assured.

The incident occurred at kilometer 119 of the canal in Abu Suwir town, where the gas pipeline passes vertically beneath the canal.

The location also intersects with the route of tunneling works for the Abu Suwir drain beneath the canal, according to the ministry.

As a precautionary measure, water intakes at several drinking water plants near the site were shut down pending confirmation that water safety and quality have not been affected, the ministry noted.

Relevant authorities are collecting water samples and conducting the necessary laboratory tests and analyses to verify their safety and compliance with standard specifications before the plants are brought back online.

Meanwhile, the incident is being technically and thoroughly examined to determine the precise cause of the pipeline rupture and take the necessary measures based on the findings, the ministry said.

The ministry stressed that all necessary measures are being taken to protect citizens and facilities and ensure the safety and quality of water in the canal.
