CAIRO – 10 August 2026: The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced that it has received a report from the Sukari Gold Mines Company regarding a rockfall inside an underground tunnel at the Sukari mine in the Eastern Desert.
According to the preliminary report, the accident resulted in the death of one worker, Abdel Rahman Nabil Mahmoud, and injuries to five others. The injured were immediately transferred to the Marsa Alam One-Day Surgery Hospital to receive medical care, where initial reports indicate their condition is stable.
Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, expressed his deepest condolences to the family, relatives, and colleagues of Abdel Rahman Nabil Mahmoud, directing that all necessary support be provided to the bereaved family. He also instructed authorities to ensure the injured receive comprehensive medical care and that their conditions are continuously monitored.
Furthermore, Badawi directed the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority to form an investigative committee to determine the causes of the accident, review occupational health and safety procedures at the mine, and implement measures to prevent future incidents.
Underground operations at the mine have been temporarily suspended pending the completion of investigations and verification that all safety protocols are strictly in place.
The Ministry affirmed that worker safety and the preservation of human life remain its top priorities, adding that it is closely monitoring the situation and the recovery of the injured.
