356 days remaining: Countdown begins for 2027 great total solar eclipse

CAIRO - 11 August 2026: The countdown has begun for the 2027 total solar eclipse, with approximately 356 days remaining until this major astronomical event. Parts of western and southwestern Saudi Arabia will witness a total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027.

 

The Jeddah Astronomical Society revealed in a report that Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Yemen, and parts of the Arab world will witness one of the most prominent astronomical events of the 21st century on August 2, 2027: a total solar eclipse.

 

This will be the first total solar eclipse visible from large parts of western Saudi Arabia in over a century, making it an exceptional scientific and historical occasion and a rare opportunity for scientists and the public to witness one of the greatest natural phenomena in the universe.

 

Viewing the eclipse is not possible without special glasses

 

Despite the magnificence of this phenomenon, viewing the sun during all phases of the partial eclipse must be done using internationally certified eclipse glasses or specialized solar observation equipment, as looking directly at the sun can cause permanent damage to the retina.

 

However, during the total eclipse phase, the sun can be safely viewed with the naked eye as long as its disk remains completely obscured.

 

The eclipse of August 2, 2027, is the most significant total solar eclipse visible from large parts of the Arabian Peninsula since the eclipse of 1905.

 

This gives it exceptional scientific and historical importance, making it an event eagerly awaited by scientists and astronomy enthusiasts worldwide.
