Flamingo found on beach in North Coast - file
CAIRO - 11 August 2026: Two white flamingos were found in both Alexandria and North Coast, where the Environment Ministry took necessary steps to protect them and place them in wildlife centers, to be released back into their natural habitat.
On Monday, authorities received reports indicating that a cafe overlooking the Alexandria Corniche was in possession of a flamingo and used as a decorative item.
Upon receiving the report, Dr. Manal Awad directed immediate action to investigate the circumstances and take the necessary measures. A joint field team from the Al-Umayed Reserve and the Regional Branches Affairs Sector in Alexandria proceeded to the location of the report to conduct an on-site inspection.
A flamingo was found being held captive inside a cafeteria. It was immediately taken into custody by the reserve's specialized team, in coordination with the relevant authorities, pending completion of the necessary legal procedures.
On Tuesday, Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Environment, announced the discovery of a white flamingo on a North Coast beach. This followed intensified search and monitoring efforts by specialists in the Ministry's Nature Protection Sector.
Both birds were placed in the Ashtoum El Gamil Wildlife Center in Port Said, where necessary care and monitoring will be conducted before its release back into its natural habitat, once its ability to survive in its natural environment is confirmed.
Protecting Wild and Migratory Birds and Preserving Biodiversity
Dr. Manal Awad emphasized the continuation of inspection campaigns to protect wildlife in various governorates. The Ministry places great importance on protecting wild and migratory birds and preserving biodiversity. She stressed the necessity of treating wildlife in accordance with its nature and needs, and that it should not be kept or treated as ornamental or decorative items outside the frameworks and regulations governing wildlife protection.
The Minister of Local Development and Environment emphasized the importance of community participation in protecting wildlife, affirming that the Ministry monitors reports and discussions concerning wildlife and takes the necessary measures to verify facts and respond to relevant reports and complaints, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
Dr. Manal Awad confirmed the Ministry of Local Development and Environment's ongoing efforts, through its Nature Protection Sector, to protect migratory birds, conserve biodiversity, and preserve natural resources, thereby ensuring the sustainability of ecosystems and protecting wildlife and its right to life within its natural habitats.
Flamingos in Egypt
In Egypt, flamingos (often appearing pale or whitish-pink depending on their diet) primarily live in coastal and inland wetland lakes during their winter migration season, which runs from November/December through April.
The top locations to see them are Lake Qarun and Wadi El-Rayan in the Fayoum Oasis, as well as the salt pans and lagoons of Port Fouad in Port Said.
Flamingos are born with white or gray feathers. They turn pink later because they eat food like algae and shrimp that have a natural red pigment. If a flamingo stays white, it means its diet lacks that pigment, or it is a baby.
