New safe landfill established in Shalateen, Red Sea Governorate, at cost of EGP 80 million

CAIRO – 14 August 2026: A new sanitary landfill has been handed over to the Red Sea Governorate to serve residents of Shalateen, near Egypt’s border with Sudan, at a cost of EGP 80 million, the Egyptian Ministry of Local Development and Environment announced in a statement on Friday.

The landfill provides an equipped site for the safe disposal of waste in accordance with technical and environmental requirements, reducing reliance on random waste disposal methods and mitigating their potential negative impacts on the environment and public health, Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad said in the statement.

The project also supports efforts to improve cleanliness and the quality of services provided to citizens, she added.

Awad noted that sanitary landfills in the cities of Marsa Alam, Safaga, Hurghada, Ras Gharib, Quseir, and Halaib have also been completed and handed over at a total cost of EGP 296 million.

This brings total investments allocated to developing the integrated waste management system in the Red Sea Governorate to approximately EGP 376 million, as part of the state’s efforts to complete the governorate’s waste-management infrastructure, promote safe waste disposal, protect the environment, and improve citizens’ quality of life.

Dr. Saeed Helmy Abdel-Khaleq, head of the Integrated Local Planning and Development Sector, said the Shalateen project was constructed on an area of 10 acres. It includes a sanitary landfill cell and a leachate evaporation pond secured by a rubble wall and an iron gate.

The facility also features a network of pipes for collecting leachate, a collection pond lined internally with plain concrete, and service roads surrounding the landfill cell and pond. A protective wall was also constructed to shield the site from flash floods.

The landfill is equipped with the necessary operational facilities, including a security room, a generator room housing two generators and a main distribution panel, lighting poles, water tanks, a main administrative building, a fuel tank, and a car wash, providing the essential infrastructure for the safe operation and monitoring of the facility.
