VIDEO: Death toll rises to 47 after 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Indonesia

CAIRO – 15 August 2026: At least 47 people were killed after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia early Saturday, triggering tsunami waves and a series of aftershocks, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said, according to Reuters.

Tsunami waves measuring less than 1 meter were recorded in several areas before the warning was lifted about three hours after the quake.

Around 2,000 residents in Nagekeo, the area closest to the epicenter, evacuated as buildings, warehouses and government facilities were damaged. Power outages and traffic disruptions were also reported.

In the port town of Maumere, rescuers recovered 20 bodies, while six people were injured and two others remained trapped under rubble, according to local authorities.

East Nusa Tenggara Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena said at least five people died after buildings collapsed while they were asleep.
