Qatar rejects claims of detaining Iranian pilots after airspace breach

DOHA – 15 August 2026: Doha on Saturday denied reports that it is detaining Iranian pilots after Qatar’s armed forces dealt with their aircraft following their violation of the country’s airspace earlier this year.

Iran International earlier on Saturday cited an Iranian Armed Forces official as claiming that three pilots survived after their Sukhoi Su-24 fighter jets went down during “March attacks” and were captured by Qatari forces.

According to the report, Mohammad Bagherzadeh, head of the Iranian Armed Forces General Staff’s committee for searching for missing personnel, made the claim in a letter to the International Committee of the Red Cross published by Fars news agency.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari dismissed the claims as misleading, saying the armed forces had contacted the pilots after their aircraft violated Qatari airspace but received no response.

“After following the rules of engagement and attempting to communicate with them without receiving a response, the necessary measures were taken to defend our territory in accordance with international law,” Al Ansari said.

He added that “this was clarified at the time through official channels.”

Al Ansari said Qatari search operations to locate the bodies resulted in the recovery of one pilot’s remains. Doha subsequently contacted the Iranian side to coordinate their handover, he said.

Qatar also invited an Iranian team in April to visit and review the details of the search and rescue operations, but Iran has yet to respond to the invitation, Al Ansari added.

The spokesperson expressed surprise that such claims were being made at this particular time, amid ongoing diplomatic efforts and initiatives aimed at de-escalating tensions in the region.
