Egypt offers condolences to Indonesia; Earthquake death toll rises to 51

CAIRO – 16 August 2026: Egypt on Sunday expressed its sincere condolences to Indonesia following a powerful earthquake that struck the country, killing and injuring many people.

In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry extended its condolences to the Indonesian government and people and affirmed Egypt’s full solidarity with Indonesia amid this tragic incident.

Egypt also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to all those injured.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday, killing at least 51 people, authorities said Sunday, making it the country’s deadliest since a 2022 quake in West Java killed hundreds.

Meanwhile, around 5,000 people have been evacuated as the quake, followed by more than 300 aftershocks, blocked roads and triggered landslides, Indonesian authorities said Sunday.

Deputy Health Minister Benjamin Paulus Octavianus said 36 people were seriously injured and another 77 sustained minor injuries in the quake.
