CAIRO — 16 August 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received Jared Kushner, the US special envoy for peace, in El-Alamein on Sunday, in the presence of Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad, and Minister Hassan Rashad, Head of the General Intelligence Directorate.
Presidency spokesperson Mohamed El-Shenawy said Kushner conveyed greetings from US President Donald Trump to President El-Sisi, who expressed his appreciation and asked Kushner to convey his greetings to the US President.
President El-Sisi underscored the strategic importance of relations between Egypt and the United States, expressing appreciation for the level of cooperation and coordination between the two countries across areas of mutual interests.
According to El-Shenawy, the meeting also addressed developments in the Middle East.
President El-Sisi stressed the importance of continued coordination to address shared challenges, noting the two countries’ commitment to supporting security and stability at both the regional and international levels. The president also emphasized the need to resolve the various crises affecting the region in order to safeguard regional stability.
The meeting further discussed developments concerning the Palestinian issue. President El-Sisi stressed the importance of all parties fulfilling their obligations under the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
For his part, Kushner praised the close coordination between Egypt and the United States and expressed appreciation for Egypt’s efforts, as well as President El-Sisi’s personal efforts, to address regional issues and promote peace and stability.
Kushner also emphasized that Egypt is a pivotal partner for the United States in the Middle East.
Kushner will meet with leaders of the Hamas delegation, which arrived in Cairo on Sunday, to discuss the implementation of the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit outcomes. He, then, will travel to Israel.
Head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service Hassan Rashad received a Hamas delegation led by the movement’s Political Bureau Chief Khalil Al-Hayya, Extra News reported on Sunday.
The two sides discussed ways to advance the implementation of the outcomes of the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit and US President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza.
Hamas praised Egypt’s efforts to consolidate stability in Gaza and safeguard the Palestinian people’s interests and resources.
The movement also reaffirmed its commitment to completing the implementation of Trump’s plan to end the suffering of Gaza’s residents and begin reconstruction efforts.
The visit comes at a particularly significant time, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement last month of a breakthrough in efforts to end the war under his plan agreed upon by Israel and Hamas.
The Board of Peace, established under the peace plan, posted a 15-point roadmap following Trump's statement, calling for an Israeli military withdrawal, the decommissioning of armed militias in the enclave, alongside the deployment of an International Stabilization Force working with a new Palestinian police force to secure Gaza.
Hamas agreed to the roadmap but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyaho rejected it, saying Israel will not withdraw its forces until Hamas is “genuinely” disarmed.
Hamas spokesperson said on Telegram that the meetings with Egyptian officials are aimed at briefing them on Israeli violations and ensuring that Israel abides by the roadmap agreed with the Board of Peace.
Despite a ceasefire that took effect in Gaza last October, Israeli forces have continued near daily attacks, killing hundreds of Palestinians and injuring thousands since then.
