Egypt gears up for national identity conference at Bibliotheca Alexandrina

ALEXANDRIA – 19 August 2026: Egypt is preparing for a national conference on identity, with the event set to bring together scientific and community perspectives on preserving the country’s identity amid rapidly changing digital and cultural landscape.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly reviewed preparations for the conference during a meeting in New Alamein City, ahead of the event at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

Held under the title “national identity: deep-rooted heritage and a renewed vision,” the conference will be held under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi as part of the national “building the Egyptian person” project.

The conference will seek to open a national dialogue on the foundations of Egyptian identity and the changes it is undergoing amid social, cultural, economic and digital developments, the Cabinet said in a statement.

Discussions will also examine challenges posed by the digital revolution and the growing influence of social media, as well as the role of state and community institutions in strengthening a shared national identity.

The event will give particular space to younger generations to present their views on the future of national identity.

A key outcome will be the issuance of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina national identity document, which will include practical recommendations to support the state’s efforts to strengthen national identity.

The document will provide a framework with actionable proposals in education, culture, media, religious discourse and civil society, aimed at fostering a sense of belonging and national awareness in addressing contemporary challenges.

Madbouly said preserving national identity and its cultural and civilizational foundations remains a top priority for the state.

He stressed the importance of raising social awareness and strengthening young people’s resilience to outside influences as the first line of defense in protecting the nation’s assets.

This goal, he added, requires coordinated efforts across educational, cultural and media institutions.

The conference is grounded in the need for strengthening awareness of national identity and developing a renewed national vision that brings together heritage and modernity.
