CAIRO – 20 August 2026: British Minister of State for the Middle East, Stephen Doughty, stated that the United Kingdom is working closely with the Egyptian government across numerous sectors, announcing a significant new bilateral agreement on migration cooperation designed to benefit both nations.
During an interview with Al Qahera News Channel, Doughty explained that discussions with Egyptian officials covered a wide range of shared priorities, including migration, green growth, and energy transition, alongside trade, investment, and regional security challenges.
The British minister emphasized that migration was a key focus of the talks, noting that the newly signed Cairo–London agreement aims to enhance coordination and strengthen the overall partnership between Egypt and the United Kingdom on shared issues.
Doughty added that both countries are actively discussing green growth initiatives and the energy transition, highlighting ongoing UK participation in solar and wind energy projects across Egypt. He noted that energy sector cooperation remains a cornerstone of bilateral economic relations, with additional plans to expand partnership and investment opportunities in the coming period.
The talks also addressed ways to boost agricultural trade and support ongoing investments by British companies in the Egyptian market. Doughty pointed out that British investments play a vital role in creating local jobs and driving prosperity, reflecting the deep-rooted and enduring ties between the British and Egyptian peoples.
Furthermore, Doughty explained that cooperation extends to critical regional challenges, including maritime security, developments in the Gaza Strip, and the dire humanitarian situation there.
Concluding his remarks, the UK Minister of State affirmed that dialogue between the United Kingdom and Egypt will remain pivotal in addressing regional crises, stressing the importance of continued coordination across political, economic, security, and humanitarian domains.
