Julius Nyerere Dam opening in Tanzania
CAIRO - 22 August 2026: Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly delivered a speech Saturday on behalf of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at the inauguration ceremony of the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam and Power Plant, a project implemented by the Egyptian consortium of Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric, in the United Republic of Tanzania.
Dr. Madbouly began his speech by expressing his pleasure at being present in the sisterly United Republic of Tanzania once again, to participate, on the direct instructions of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, in the inauguration ceremony of the Julius Nyerere Dam.
The Prime Minister continued his speech, saying: “This great Tanzanian dream has now become a reality. This magnificent edifice, whose construction has been completed and which is now operational, stands before our eyes today as a testament to the strong will of the Tanzanian people and the considerable technical capabilities and expertise of Egypt. It reinforces the shared political awareness between our two countries regarding the tremendous achievements our peoples can attain on the path to sustainable development, provided that the spirit of brotherhood, understanding, and cooperation prevails.”
On this occasion, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly conveyed the sincere greetings and best wishes of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to Her Excellency President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the sisterly United Republic of Tanzania, and to the brotherly Tanzanian people. The Prime Minister also extended his heartfelt congratulations to the sisterly nation of Tanzania on this great achievement, expressing his sincere wishes for its continued prosperity and progress.
The Prime Minister reiterated Egypt's full readiness to continue cooperation and partnership with our brothers in Tanzania, and with all our African brothers across the continent, to build a better present that we deserve and that befits us, and for a promising future that we dream of for our children.
Dr. Mostafa Madbouly said: “The successful completion of this great Tanzanian dam project, after forty-two months of hard work, at a cost of approximately $2.9 billion, and with a power generation capacity of 2,115 megawatts, demonstrates the capability and potential of Egyptian companies to execute major projects internationally, and especially in our sister African continent. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the two Egyptian consortium companies (Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric) for this historic achievement in building one of the three largest dams in Africa.”
“I assure Her Excellency President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan and my brother, Prime Minister Mwigulu Nshimba, of our eagerness to capitalize on the significant momentum following the successful completion of the Julius Nyerere Dam and Hydropower Project, to bring about a qualitative leap in bilateral cooperation across all sectors, particularly the economic sphere, including increasing trade and encouraging investment between our two countries,” the Prime Minister added.
Dr. Mostafa Madbouly reiterated the importance of intensifying bilateral cooperation with the participation of the private sector in several promising economic sectors. He emphasized the need to build upon the successful visit of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to Dar es Salaam on July 18, 2016, which witnessed intensive activities and meetings between business leaders from both countries to explore cooperation opportunities in various fields, including construction, roads, maritime transport and ports, logistics zones, agriculture and land reclamation, fishing and aquaculture, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, electricity and energy, and other areas of mutual interest.
The Prime Minister stated, “I would like to assure Her Excellency the President of Tanzania today of Cairo’s appreciation for the positive and balanced positions adopted by our sister nation, the United Republic of Tanzania, on numerous regional issues of mutual concern. In this regard, I reiterate our aspiration to strengthen Tanzania’s positive and constructive role, which is based on fostering understanding and a spirit of cooperation among the Nile Basin countries.”
Dr. Mostafa Madbouly concluded his speech by expressing his happiness at participating with the brothers in the United Republic of Tanzania, on behalf of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in their national celebrations of the official opening of the Julius Nyerere Dam and Power Station project.
He also reiterating his sincere congratulations to Her Excellency President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the sisterly United Republic of Tanzania, and to the brotherly Tanzanian people on this great achievement, and expressing his sincere thanks for the warm welcome and generous hospitality.
For her part, the President of Tanzania said: "We thank Egypt, under the leadership of President El-Sisi, for its support of the Julius Nyerere project," adding, "We have overcome the challenges that faced the implementation of this project."
During her speech at the official inauguration of the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam and Power Station in the United Republic of Tanzania, the President added: "Cooperation with Egypt extends over decades, and we are implementing numerous investment projects in the field of electricity transmission."
