CAIRO – 22 August 2026: An Israeli strike in southern Syria on Saturday caused injuries amongst civilians, according to the Syrian foreign ministry, further fueling tensions between Syria and Israel.

The ministry said the strike was conducted by a drone, targeting a civilian vehicle on a road near Beit Jinn village in Rif Dimashq.

Damascus condemned repeated Israeli attacks on Syria and said it holds Israel “fully accountable for the repercussions” of such actions.

The Israeli military claimed that the attack targeted “a terrorist” who was preparing an attack that posed an immediate threat to Israeli forces stationed in the Arab nation.

The attack came days after Israel bombed Syria’s Abu al-Duhur airbase in the northwest, an escalation that US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack said might have been intended to provoke Türkiye, Syria’s neighbor.
