The Cairo International Film Festival has announced that Egyptian star Khaled El Nabawy will be honored with the Faten Hamama Excellence Award during its 46th edition, which will take place from November 12 to 21. This award recognizes his remarkable career spanning more than 35 years of unforgettable performances.
Khaled El Nabawy is celebrated as one of his generation's most accomplished and insightful actors, known for his belief in art as a cultural and human message that transcends borders. He began his career in the late 1980s, gradually rising through roles in film and television before capturing attention with his layered performances and his unique ability to craft characters from the inside out, marked by emotional precision and quiet strength.
A graduate of the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts (1989), El Nabawy made his screen debut the same year in Laylat Asal (Honeymoon Night) directed by Mohamed Abdel Aziz. He went on to star in El-Mowaten Masry (The Egyptian Citizen) directed by Salah Abu Seif, before achieving his breakthrough in Youssef Chahine’s landmark film The Emigrant (1994) — a turning point that propelled him to international recognition.
His subsequent works further cemented his place among the icons of modern Egyptian cinema, with standout performances in Al-Maseer (Destiny), Omar 2000, El Dealer, and El Mosafer (The Traveller). These acclaimed roles opened the door to Hollywood productions such as Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven, Fair Game alongside Naomi Watts and Sean Penn, and The Citizen, which he headlined and presented at numerous international festivals.
Parallel to his film career, El Nabawy has built a distinguished television legacy, from his early success in Bawabet El Halawani to more recent works like Emberatoriat Meem (The Empire of M). His stage work is equally notable — from local productions like El Genzir to his acclaimed portrayal of President Anwar El Sadat in the Washington D.C. production of Camp David at Arena Stage.
Founded in 1976 under the patronage of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, the Cairo International Film Festival remains one of the oldest and most prestigious festivals in the Arab world and Africa — and the only one in the region accredited as a Category “A” festival by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) in Paris.
By honoring Khaled El Nabawy with the Faten Hamama Excellence Award, the festival celebrates not only his extraordinary artistry but also his enduring contribution to the legacy and global reach of Egyptian cinema.
