CAIRO - 23 August 2026: Los Angeles witnessed Saturday the formal ceremony of handing over 48 historical Egyptian artifacts to Egypt by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The repatriation reflects the ongoing cooperation between Egypt and the United States in recovering smuggled Egyptian antiquities and safeguarding Egypt’s cultural heritage, announced the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Sunday.

Dr. Hossam El-Din Ali, the Egyptian Consul General in Los Angeles, received the returned artifacts and delivered remarks expressing Egypt’s deep appreciation for the repatriation of these rare and historically significant pieces to their homeland.

He commended the strong level of cooperation between Egypt and the United States across various fields, particularly in efforts to recover smuggled Egyptian antiquities, combat the illicit trafficking of cultural property, and preserve Egypt’s rich cultural heritage.

On its X account, the FBI In Los Angeles announced on Saturday that FBI Assistant Director in Charge, Patrick Grandy, hosted the Consul General for Egypt and the Regional Director of the State Department at a ceremony and was joined by members of the FBI's Art Crime Team and the FBI's Legal Attache assigned to Cairo, to announce the repatriation of 48 ancient artifacts to the country of Egypt.

The items, most of which are thousands of years old, include amulets, carved figures and funerary objects from the Pharaonic, Roman and Coptic periods. ADIC Grandy and the Consul General signed ceremonial repatriation certificates at the event.
