Egypt backed Trump’s Gaza plan to spare region from open-ended conflict: FM

NEW YORK – 19 February 2026: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has underscored Egypt’s efforts to shield the region from “an open-ended conflict” by supporting US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza and hosting a peace summit.

The foreign minister made the remarks during a ministerial Security Council meeting on the Middle East in New York on Wednesday, stressing Egypt’s support to a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian cause.

He welcomed the timing of the session amid intensified regional and international efforts toward a fair resolution to the Palestinian cause, while warning of continued challenges stemming from Israeli policies in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Abdelatty stressed the necessity of the full implementation of international obligations related to ending the war in Gaza.

Egypt has supported Trump’s plan and hosted the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit for Peace in October 2025 to advance war-ending efforts, avoid liquidation of the Palestinian cause, and spare the region from the repercussions of an open-ended conflict that threatens regional and international peace and security, he said.

Abdelatty said the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2803 on Nov. 17, 2025, provides a binding international framework for implementing transitional arrangements in Gaza and complements existing international resolutions on the Palestinian cause.

He emphasized that Egypt has stepped up coordination with international partners to support the first phase of Trump’s plan, including consolidating the ceasefire, resolving the captive file, and removing obstacles to humanitarian aid delivery into Gaza.

He called on Israeli to ensure unimpeded humanitarian access, including through the Rafah crossing.

‘Collective Responsibility’

The minister stressed that implementing the commitments under Resolution 2803 and the war-ending plan is a collective responsibility.

He urged Israel to halt ceasefire violations and stop obstructing humanitarian assistance or restricting the work of international and UN relief organizations.

He also underscored the importance of accelerating early recovery and reconstruction efforts in Gaza to restore basic services, stabilize the population, and create conditions conducive to lasting stability.

Gaza Administration Committee

Abdelatty called for enabling the Palestinian National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, formed in line with Resolution 2803, to operate from inside the enclave during the transitional phase, paving the way for the Palestinian Authority to fully assume its responsibilities.

He also emphasized the need to swiftly form and deploy an international stabilization force to monitor the ceasefire and ensure aid flows, alongside supporting the deployment of Palestinian police personnel to maintain security.

West Bank Measures

Meanwhile, the minister condemned “illegal Israeli measures aimed at imposing Israeli sovereignty and consolidating settlement activity in the occupied West Bank.”

He condemned attempts to impose a new legal and administrative reality in the West Bank.

Abdelatty urged Israel, as the occupying power, to fully comply with international law and international humanitarian law, halt all measures aimed at displacing Palestinians or altering the demographic character of the occupied territories.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the growing international momentum toward recognition of the State of Palestine and renewed the call for granting it full UN membership.

Israel Withdrawal from Region

He added that achieving comprehensive regional peace also requires ending Israel’s occupation of all Arab territories, including withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan, respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions.

Abdelatty concluded by reiterating Egypt’s vision for a just and comprehensive peace in the region.

He cited President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s assertion that the Middle East stands before a historic opportunity to achieve a future in which all peoples of the region enjoy peace, stability, and dignified living under respect for sovereignty and international law.
