CAIRO – 22 July 2026: The United States carried out a fresh wave of military strikes against Iranian targets for the 11th consecutive night on Wednesday, aiming to “degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping” in the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
Each round of US strikes has been met with Iranian retaliation targeting American military facilities across the Gulf. One recent attack killed three US service members in Jordan, while another US soldier was killed in Iraq during the controlled demolition of an Iranian drone.
Trump has vowed that Iran would pay "many times over" for the deaths of US personnel.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the latest strikes targeted Iranian military operations centers, maritime capabilities, aircraft hangars, drone storage facilities, and military logistics infrastructure.
Iran on Wednesday responded with new retaliatory attacks on US military facilities in Kuwait and Jordan, as President Donald Trump warned that a suspected underground nuclear site could be the next target.
Iran's army announced that it launched drone strikes against US military bases in Kuwait and Jordan, saying the attacks targeted ammunition depots, logistics infrastructure, accommodation buildings, and an equipment warehouse, Iran’s semi-official news agency Tasnim reported.
According to the Iranian statement, a large number of suicide drones struck ammunition depots and logistics facilities at Camp Doha in western Kuwait, while separate drones targeted accommodation and welfare buildings and an equipment warehouse at Al Azraq Air Base in Jordan.
The latest exchanges came weeks after Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at halting military operations, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and pursuing a broader agreement to end the conflict within 60 days.
The truce collapsed after Trump declared the ceasefire "over" following Iranian attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil and LNG trade passed before the Iran war.
The cost of the US war with Iran has reached $37.5 billion so far, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Tuesday.
Speaking during a White House meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Tuesday, Trump said the next US target could be Pickaxe Mountain, an underground nuclear site where Iran is suspected of developing an undeclared uranium enrichment facility.
"We'll be hitting that area pretty soon, and very heavily," Trump said.
Iran's Khatam Al-Anbiya military command warned that such an attack would constitute "an explosion of war in the region," threatening attacks on "all the interests of America, the allies and supporters," according to state media.
Choking Red Sea Oil Flows
Trump also warned the Iran-backed Houthi militia against carrying out its threatened blockade of Saudi ports, saying the United States would "take care of" the group if it followed through.
The warning came after a Houthi media official announced plans to close the Bab al-Mandab Strait to Saudi vessels, raising the prospect of further disruption to global oil supplies already affected by attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM said Iran has attacked more than 30 commercial vessels over the past three months in the strategic waterway, endangering hundreds of civilian mariners and undermining freedom of navigation.
Despite the attacks, it said the Strait of Hormuz remains open to commercial traffic, with US forces helping facilitate the transit of about 900 commercial vessels carrying roughly 450 million barrels of crude oil since early May.
