Egypt upgrades 33 government slaughterhouses to semi-automated systems to boost meat safety

CAIRO – 20 August 2026: Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Environment, announced that 33 government slaughterhouses across Egypt’s governorates have been converted from traditional manual operations to advanced semi-automated systems.

The Minister said ministerial decisions have been issued for the upgraded facilities, a step that is expected to strengthen Egypt’s position internationally in the fields of slaughterhouse development, food safety, and the production of safe and healthy meat.

Awad stressed the Ministry’s commitment to the national project to develop and raise the efficiency of government slaughterhouses across the governorates. The project is funded through the Ministry’s budget and aims to accelerate implementation, overcome obstacles, and coordinate with relevant ministries and partner agencies to complete the targeted development plan.

The first phase of the project includes the development of 43 government slaughterhouses. Ministerial decisions have already been issued for 33 facilities, while the remaining 10 slaughterhouses are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. The facilities will then be converted to advanced semi-automated slaughterhouses and handed over to the respective governorates to serve citizens.

Awad noted that the development program goes beyond upgrading machinery and mechanical lines for slaughtering, skinning, and meat processing. For the first time, the program also incorporates green economy standards into Egypt’s slaughterhouse system.

Some of the upgraded facilities have been equipped with biogas production units and advanced wastewater treatment plants, enabling the safe utilization of organic waste while reducing environmental pollution and protecting surrounding communities.
