New archeological discovery in Sinai

CAIRO – 15 August 2026: As part of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ efforts, represented by the Supreme Council of Antiquities, to uncover Egypt’s archaeological and cultural heritage and shed further light on the history of Sinai, its cities, and historic routes, an archaeological mission has uncovered the remains of a building in the ancient city of Asila in North Sinai.

The discovery was made by a Supreme Council of Antiquities mission working on Islamic and Coptic antiquities in the region. The building is believed to have been one of the caravanserais that served trade caravans, as well as Egyptian pilgrims and travelers along the Sultan’s Road, also known as the Egyptian Hajj Road.

The historic route connected Egypt with the Arabian Peninsula and the Levant and played an important role in facilitating the movement of pilgrims, merchants, and travelers between the regions.
