The discovery was made by a Supreme Council of Antiquities mission working on Islamic and Coptic antiquities in the region. The building is believed to have been one of the caravanserais that served trade caravans, as well as Egyptian pilgrims and travelers along the Sultan’s Road, also known as the Egyptian Hajj Road.
